Hurricane Dean hits the Yucatan peninsula
MAJAHUAL, Mexico - Hurricane Dean swept across the Yucatan peninsula Tuesday, toppling trees, power lines and houses as it bore down on the heart of Mexico's oil industry. Glitzy resorts on the Mayan Riviera were spared, but vulnerable Mayan villages were exposed to the full fury of one of history's most intense storms.
President Felipe Calderon said no deaths were immediately reported in Mexico, after Dean killed 13 people in the Caribbean. But driving rain, poor communications and impassable roads made it difficult to determine how isolated Mayan communities fared in the sparsely populated jungle where Dean made landfall as a ferocious Category 5 hurricane.
Dean was the third-most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall since record keeping began in the 1850s.

World's longest river found in Mayan Riviera
Two divers exploring the Yucatan region near the Caribbean beach resort of Playa del Carmen have recently identified what is possibly the longest underground river in the world. The found waterway is said to twist and turn through the limestone caves for 95 miles and connects two cave systems.
British diver Stephen Bogaerts and fellow diver Robbie Schmittner from Germany, spent four years exploring the area looking for a connection between Sac Actun and Nohoch Nah Chich, the Yucatan’s second and third longest cave systems.
They recently made the final connection of the systems and according to Gene Melton, chair of the National Speleological Society’s Cave Diving Section, the connection caps 20 years of mapping in this Yucatan labyrinth. The divers believe that the river may connect to two other major systems, which would add an additional 125 miles to its length.
